With CUNA Production, we are setting new standards in industrial plastics manufacturing. CUNA Production represents a state-of-the-art, networked, and sustainable production environment where innovative technologies are researched and applied in real production processes. This cooperative of 10 partners impressively demonstrates how AI innovations and sustainability can be directly implemented in practice and what advantages they offer to companies.

What is CUNA Production?

The highly modern injection molding production with a high degree of automation enables the efficient and networked production of sustainable plastic cups in a 2-cavity mold. Modern laser marking allows for individualization of the cup.

Thanks to innovative technologies from Fraunhofer IOSB-INA, the production can be individually started and controlled via a webshop. Batch size 1 production is possible with a simultaneous high degree of automation. At the same time, digital twins based on the Industrie 4.0 administration shell enable comprehensive networking of all individual components, thus creating interoperable communication for the flexible, agile, and highly networked production plant.

With the help of state-of-the-art technologies such as IoT and AI, energy data is analyzed and visualized in real time. Optimization algorithms allow the system to react to changes in real time and operate it efficiently in a continuously optimized production mode. By converting to direct current technologies, feeds become possible for additional energy savings.

Circular economy concepts are taken into account, as the CUNA cup not only implements re-use via a reusable system, but can even be regranulated and processed into new products thanks to the cooperation with IKU OWL.
